Instructor: Lauren Christman, LMT, assisted by Richard Polishuk, LMT; NCBTMB #450788-08
Ida Rolf used to talk about freeing a structure “from above” as well as “from below”. Most treatment of the TMJ involves strategies “from below”: working with the muscles that surround the mandible. This is extremely useful for joint function and position, as we learned in the Essentials of Intraoral course.
However, for some of us, the base of the skull itself (the "cranial base") is unbalanced, creating an asymmetric platform for the joints. With intraoral work, we have wonderful access to this area. In this class we'll review the anatomy and function of the cranial base, and learn how to assess and balance the occiput, temporal bones, sphenoid, dural membranes and sub-occipital muscles.
The manual technique is gentle, specific and highly effective, allowing you to work with people who have recent trauma or acute pain. Some techniques will be from within the mouth; some will be external, allowing for varied treatment goals. The instructors have a wide background in structural, cranial and orthopedic methods, and are committed to bridging with various learning styles and individual backgrounds.
Enrollment is limited to ensure a good student-teacher ratio and there is ample in-class exchange time.
Prerequisite: Endorsement to practice intraoral work. Those therapists who have previous intraoral classwork, but are not endorsed may attend class with prior approval from the instructor. Please contact Lauren at: lauren@craftedtouch.com.
